Make It Yellow

Okay. Ms. Shawn at school has been telling us for weeks now that she thinks that Bella is ready for potty training. We tried it one Saturday and she kept having so many accidents without any obvious progress, Paul and I just gave up and put the big girl panties in the back of her drawer. The week before her birthday, I decided that with Bella turning 2, she really needed to try again (especially since she’s still freaking out about the diaper changing table). Paul and I talked about it and we agreed that the time was right. We told the school that the Tuesday after Memorial Day, we would start. 5/26 came and we took her to school with big girl panties on, dresses without bloomers to make going to the potty easier, but with a few extra pairs of clothes for Ms. Shawn, just in case.
The first didn’t go well at all. Like that Saturday with us a little while back. Sammie’s parents (she is a friend of Bella’s in her class) heard Bella was potty training so they jumped on the bandwagon, knowing if there’s a partner, it goes much faster. The 2nd day, Bella actually started using the potty for peepee and would get a sticker each time. Ms. Shawn found that if Bella could focus on ‘making the water yellow’, she’d have enough desire to try. This still works but stickers were a great reward too. The whole first week, she had a few accidents but made several great attempts each day with potty usage-never used it at home though. One June 1st, she had a great day at school with cupcakes we brought for her class-giving each child a crazy straw to take home with them. We came home after school together and before dinner, I took her to go potty since needs to go every hour (or at least try) and had not had one accident all day. She Finally went peepee in the potty at home and found that it made music for her reward. The look of surprise on her face was priceless. She not only got to make the water yellow, got to use potty paper to clean her pooky, got to dump it in the Big potty and flush it But now she could make music and get a sticker as a reward too-boy, this whole potty training thing is a great gig!
Anyway, she’s done poopoo in the potty, can use any potty she wants to (although she has some dislike for certain public restrooms but who can blame her). We’ve had a few accidents in public and at the house and at church but overall, I think she’s doing a great job. So much so that Paul and I broke down all the stuff from her diaper changing table and put it in storage. We only use diapers for nap time and night time now. She’s such a big girl (and it’s cute how she even shows pride in herself for doing it too).
On a side note, who would have thought that a 2 year old could poop out something that’s as big as something an adult can put out, without much strain at all-DUDE, I had to show Paul-looking back, it’s disgusting but at the time, it was nothing short of amazing!
