That’s my girl, says Daddy…
August 14th, 2009 Posted 9:02 pm
I recounted an anecdote to Paul yesterday of something that happened in Sunday School last Sunday. He and I teach the 2-3 yr olds so we are constantly taking turns with each other and the assistant teacher on ‘potty breaks’. On one such trip, Paul had taken all the boys and the classroom assistant Joy had left early for choir so it was just me, Bella and 2 other little girls. Bella was sitting close to me and the other girls were on the opposite side of the small children’s size table. I had smelled gas a little earlier and started smelling something again so I just blurted out ‘okay, who tooted?’. Each child was finishing their snacks but immediately looked up in shock and awe that I had asked such a thing. While I was pondering if their shocked looks meant they were guilty, I glanced in the corner of my eye that Bella was dancing away in her chair enjoying the heck out of her snacks. I turned to her and before I could say anything, she spoke up and with much pride said ‘I did it Mama. I tooted.’ and gave me a big ole smile to show how much pride she had in that declaration.
Paul about fell out of his chair laughing when I told him that story. And I’m sure you are too. Bella my baby girl is sometimes as stinky as a boy, maybe we should call her Billie…

Enunciation
August 14th, 2009 Posted 8:55 pm
Bella does a very good job of pronouncing different words like Christopher, all 3 syllables:). She pointed to a red gas can in the garage she’d never seen before and asked ‘whatszat?’ (which means ‘what’s that’ in Bella language). I told her it was gasoline. She repeated questionly ‘gasoline?’, perfectly pronounced. Now every time she passes it, she says ‘no gas, gasoline’.
Over dinner last night, I commented on how well she was speaking and all of the sudden, she blurts out ‘I no like my noodles, no like my sgetti’. We both started laughing. She is great with words until it comes to something as cute as mispronouncing the word that almost every kid can’t pronounce-now it’s either sgetti or basgetti, depending on her mood, I guess. She actually does talk very well for her age.

Time Out
August 14th, 2009 Posted 8:49 pm
Last Thursday night, Paul was out of town for work so I was excited to tell Bella when I picked her up from school that it was just going to be her and me for the night. She was excited and said emphatically ‘my daddy at wook’. I began describing to her that we would go home, go to the potty, change our clothes and then go eat dinner at Shomars-our usual date place for she and I. She was great until we got home and didn’t want to go potty although I knew she needed to. The swatting of the thigh started and she kicked and screamed until I got her on the potty-but the whining and wiggling began until I had to hold her down on the potty. She eventually ‘made it yellow’ which is what she calls going pee-pee which excited her and made us both laugh at this big girl act. It didn’t last long because she immediately wanted berries and chocolate milk. I said she couldn’t have berries because we needed to hurry to dinner but she could have some chocolate milk. That started the screaming and kicking all over again and from there it was just a cycle. I placed her in the corner of the kitchen and told her to stay there in time out while I went upstairs to change my clothes. (more…)

You are my sunshine…
August 14th, 2009 Posted 8:31 pm
We’ve been singing this song to Bella for quite some time-I know I’ve been singing it to her since she was in my belly but Paul picked it up and now sometimes Bella will sing with us also. Last Thursday night when Paul was out of town on business, she and I had our usual dinner date but only after she was in time-out for over an hour for some temper tamtrum she was throwing but basically she wouldn’t listen to me or do anything I asked her to do. The whole time-out experience was an ordeal I’ll cover later.
As for singing, when we were in the end process of our bedtime routine (which is always very sweet when it’s just she and I), we started to sing songs together. We began singing ‘You are my sunshine’ and all of the sudden, I noticed she was singing almost every word of it with me. A few days later, she and I were taking turns pretending we were asleep while Paul started to fall asleep on the end of the bed. Bella said ‘lay down Mama, I cover you up’. I laid down and she gently fluffed the blanket in order for it to lay over me. She said ‘I tuck you in’ and started shoving the blanket into all sorts of places to make me ‘comfortable’. She then laid her head down next to mine and said ‘I sing Shunshine wif you’nodding her head in agreement the entire time. I started the song but Bella quickly joined in. I’ll try to write out the words as she sings it-keep in mind she dramatizes the melody so the high parts are especially cute when you hear it (yes, Paul did record it the next time because it woke him up and said he really enjoyed our ‘show’). We also like to fill in our names throughout the song sometimes but Bella adds names in there in more spots than we normally do.
‘ You ah my shunshine-only shunshine. You make Mama happy when skies great. You never oh dear, much I love Bella. Please no take my Mama a-way.’
Video will be uploaded shortly for your viewing pleasure-no tears please:) – EDIT, it’s the post from August 11.

A Little Helper
August 1st, 2009 Posted 9:07 pm
Bella can talk so well, she has the words to communicate exactly how much she wants to help out around the house. She was downstairs helping Paul with the laundry for a little bit then she came upstairs with him and saw that I was washing the windows. Bella ran over to where I was and said ‘I clean too’. She turned to Paul and said ‘ Daddy, I need a paper towel’ ‘Mama, spray some right here’ all while pointing at the paper towels for Daddy and pointing at the window so I could spray some Windex on it for her to clean. Once she was tired of cleaning the only spot she could reach, she said ‘I clean higher’. I asked to get her stool. She ran to get it, brought it back in and climbed up on top, followed immediately by more pointing and saying ‘Mama, I need more spray’.
First polishing, then laundry, now windows. Oh yeah, she swept the floor for me the other day too-with a Swiffer, but it still got some stuff up. Can’t wait til the day when she can ask for money for doing these chores and I get to tell her ‘Heck no!’
